The Geography
Venice turns the lagoon city and its surrounding islands into a 2000ร1500 regional map. The Grand Canal, port basins, Lido, Murano and smaller islands fragment the urban fabric into narrow strips of land. Only 27% of the field is land, with 15 district and island starts packed around an intricate network of waterways.
The History
Settlements in the lagoon grew into the Republic of Venice, a maritime power that dominated Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean trade for centuries. Its merchant empire reached its height in the late Middle Ages before changing trade routes and rival powers weakened it; Napoleon ended the republic in 1797.
The Battlefield
No large hinterland exists here: ports, crossings and short waterfronts decide expansion. Central Venice offers many connections but little safety, while Lido and the outer islands can consolidate along narrower fronts. Naval movement can appear from almost any direction. Hold a compact cluster of adjacent districts, protect both ends of key canals and do not confuse isolation with security.
